If you are a newcomer to Alberta from a country without a reciprocal agreement, such as Ireland, you will have to undergo testing. You must first complete your Class 7 learner's test, which is a pretty straighforward multiple choice exam that you can take at a local Alberta Registry Agent office. To pass this test you must successfully answer 25 out of 30 questions.
Following receipt of the Class 7 licence you can apply for a Class 5 licence. There are two types of Class 5 licence - basic and advanced. There aren't too many differences between the two types, however, one of the differences is that someone with a Class 5 GDL (basic version) has a lower allowance of demerit points before a licence suspension.
