The Alberta Government has invested in excess of $1.4 billion since 2005 in major road projects associated with Highways 63 and 881 to improve access to the Athabasca oil sands region and the $423 million provision in their 2014 budget will continue this investment trend, and in fact more than doubles last year's investment.
More than 20% of the 240 kilometres of twinning is complete with another 60% under construction. The Alberta Government estimate that 70% of this work will be completed by the third quarter of 2015, and that the remaining 30% will be finalised within another year.
"By this summer, all the contracts will have been awarded and we expect about 650 workers and 470 pieces of equipment to be out in fuill force" according to Mr. Wayne Drysdale, Minister for Transport.
